What Do Agents Want?
By Mark Goldstein
We're a small high-volume agency, less concerned with the number agents contracted than the production levels of the agents already on staff. We pride ourselves on providing the support and training agents need to thrive in today's market. In fact, you might say its an obsession with us. We track the weekly production levels of all our agents to maximize their production. Consequently, our overall production-per-agent figures are though the roof.
Here are a few lessons we've learned along the way:
Talent begets talent. Our sales superstars share in the recruiting, training and managing of new agents. We've implemented a mentoring system, whereby elite producers can earn override commissions on the production of the agents that they help train. This system gets new agents up and running much more quickly than any other we've seen.
Feed them leads. Double-verified, high quality, telemarketer-generated leads motivate a below average agent to produce at an above average pace. Our agents qualify for leads based on production volume. I'm also a big believer in having multiple streams of lead generation and our reps have been successful using newspaper advertising, radio, cable TV, signs, billboards, auto-dialers, etc.
Reward production. We've been very successful at using vacation packages as incentives. Our agents have an opportunity to qualify for as many as five all expense-paid vacations every year. Recent trips have included Tahiti, Maui, Vancouver, Paradise Island, San Francisco, and San Diego.
Direct and easy access to underwriting. It's important to make it possible for agents to call and speak directly to a live underwriter anytime they feel it would be of help, and especially if they're with a potential client and uncertain on how to proceed with a case. Enabling this line of communication gives producers a better chance of success in the field.
Position them as experts. We provide our agents with special, customized reports, establishing them as authorities within their field. These reports give the agent added credibility and, more often than not a slam-dunk client presentation.
